The Tour of Ayrshire Chrono and Gran Fondo are qualifying events for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships ( the Worlds). The Tour of Ayrshire is one of 19 qualifying events around the world. The only qualifying event in the United Kingdom is the Tour of Cambridgeshire.
The UCI Gran Fondo World Championships replaced the UCI Amateur World Championships as the preferred format for Masters road racing. The Worlds have a time trial and a road race event as well as a relay. The competition at the Worlds is based upon the UCI Masters age / gender classifications which are:
Ages are determined as of December 31st in the year of the competition.
The top 25% of riders to finish in their age / gender classification in the Chrono or the Gran Fondo qualification event will be invited by the UCI to compete in the Worlds. The basis of the 25% is the total number of starters in the Gran Fondo; the combined numbers of the Race and Sport communities.
At the Worlds it is necessary for all riders to hold a current ‘Full Racing License’ from their governing body. In the case of riders holding a British Passport the governing body is British Cycling.
In 2017 the Worlds are in Albi in France between August 27th and the 30th.
